Last minute change of plan this morning - Grawp called me at 8:00 and suggested Hythe, as it would be cross shore and a bit less manic than Camber. Still, when I arrived at 10:00 it was 4.7 weather at least (probably more like 4.2) and the sea was heaving - I opted for the 4.7 Voodoo heavily downhauled and my Rocket 61. I was going to give the K-bay waveboard a go, but thought I'd be better off on a board I knew well today.

Heading into the water the shorebreak looked pretty fearsome, and my fist attempt at getting out saw me get rinsed a few times. That only happened as I was hurrying to get out before the next set arrived and so didn't take the time to get myself in position properly. Anyhow, the next attempt saw me get outside, and it was pretty mental out there (by my standards that is!). There were some big old lumps of water moving around, which made me nervous and gave me Elvis legs. Made a few silly mistakes and ended up losing a lot of ground down wind. Still, had some crazy out of control sleigh rides for a while, then headed back in to the beach (before drifiting to Dover!). After regrouping and doing a long walk of shame, I headed back out (after first watching a few people get munched in the shorebreak). This time I got straight out there, and felt a lot more comfortable. Blasted around for a while, but was still losing ground down wind and my boom was slipping, and so rode in right up on to the sand.(to avoid getting eaten) and did the walk again. I was knackered by this stage, and so just spectated for a while, happy in the knowledge that I'd got out the back on a proper windy and wavy day. 6 months ago I'd never have imagined sailing in those conditions. Secretly I'm quite pleased with myself for getting out today!
